The Christmas lists of children around the world shrunk a little after one of this year's hot holiday toys was pulled from store shelves this week.

Many parents simply dumped the Chinese-made Aqua Dots in the trash after hearing the latest in what has become a long list of toy recalls this year.

Aqua Dots — a craft kit that allows children to create designs using small colored beads — was recalled Wednesday amid reports that a chemical on the beads turns into a powerful "date rape" drug when ingested. Children in the United States and Australia were hospitalized after swallowing the beads.

The Aqua Dots beads fuse together when sprayed with water to create multi-dimensional designs such as mermaids, unicorns and trucks. But according to scientists, a chemical coating on the beads, when ingested, metabolizes into the "date rape" drug gamma hydroxy butyrate, also known by street names such as Liquid X, G, Liquid Ecstasy or Georgia Home Boy.

I am curious about that last one - Georgia Home Boy?

Yeah, it is one of the media-fed street names, just like "Adam" for Ecstasy, which I have never heard outside of the MSM. I used to say Georgia Home Boy, just because I thought it was funny to use a name for it that no one else used.

GHB gets a bad rap. If you want to learn about it, I strongly suggest erowid.org.

All the reports that say it is odorless and tasteless were obviously written by people that have never tried it, by the way.

Well my recreational pharmaceuticals days are behind me but my preference was always for the type of thing that keeps you awake - this doesn't sound like my kind of fun. ;-)

I used to say Georgia Home Boy

Just curious, TKE, do you know the logic behind why GHB was given that nickname?

The other three names I can sort of figure out, but that one has me stumped.

I think that nickname arose because the first three letters are the same (obvious), and it acts as a code that law enforcement supposedly won't be able to figure out. I could be wrong, but that sounds the most logical to me. It is easy to make up names that you think no one will be able to figure out.

TKE, thanks for the info.

Yes I caught the G. H. and B for the first letters but thought it seemed to obvious for a street name.

I have a hard time believing that this is an accident.

Really? The other option - deliberate poisoning of children - is too horrible for me to contemplate.

It just seems like there are so many toxic products lately.

This seems so far fetched that IMO, it does seem difficult to believe that GHB precursor would be on the beads destined for children. Children put everything in their mouth.

It Just seems odd that no one knew that about the chemical they used.

I may very well just be paranoid, though. :)
